Songs for Babyn Yar
mon ami
80 years ago, Nazi occupying forces murdered more than 33,000 Jews in the ravine of Babyn Yar in the suburbs of Kyiv, Ukraine, over just two days. In the following two years of Nazi occupation, Babyn Yar became the site of over 100,000 deaths.
Now three Ukrainian musicians, Yuriy Gurzhy, Svetlana Kundish and Mariana Sadovska, journey deep into their shared past, exploring the tragedy of Babyn Yar across languages, through interviews with survivors, personal reflection, storytelling, poetry and traditional Yiddish and Ukrainian folk songs.
Songs for Babyn Yar poignantly searches for an understanding of the past to make sense of the unresolved present.
